Can My Upstairs Neighbors Hear Me?

At Indian Woods Apartments in Evansville, IN weve found that the majority of residents are kind, respectful, and courteous when it comes to noise. In fact, many residents ask us if there are ways to reduce their own noise in order to not disturb their neighbors.

Stopping by the leasing office they ask, can my upstairs neighbors hear me? The answer to that question depends on several factors that we aim to demystify in this article.

Read on to learn how apartments can get noisy, which sounds travel the furthest, and how to soundproof your home!

What Makes It So Noisy?

If you live in an apartment building, its possible that you have both upstairs and downstairs neighbors. Just as they need to respect your right to peace and quiet, you are also asked to respect theirs.

Here are a few variables that influence the way sound travels between apartments:

  • The structure of the building
  • Flooring/wall materials
  • Distance between floors
  • Furniture and layout of the apartment
  • Time of day
  • Building and municipal noise level restrictions

All these factors can influence how loud certain apartments are and the probability of your neighbors complaining about noise to the property manager.

Which Noises Are the Loudest?

Living in an apartment is very convenient,  but since you're so close to your neighbors, things that you'd be able to do in a home may not be appropriate. For example

Footsteps

Do you walk around your apartment late at night or early in the morning? It's possible that your neighbors are more aware of these footsteps at those times than during the day.

The effect can also be exacerbated in apartments that have wooden floors and inadequate soundproofing.

Conversations

Are you a chatty Cathy? Is someone in your home training to be an opera singer? Do you often throw dinner parties with loud conversation? These scenarios can easily cause voices to rise and travel into neighboring apartments.

Music and TV

This source of noise directly relates to renter responsibilities— namely, the responsibility to regulate the volume of music, television, and gaming. Loud sounds travel quickly, especially if you have high quality speakers and have a habit of turning the volume up high!

Appliances

There are two potential issues with appliances: vibration and placement. Let's tackle vibration first. Appliances like washing machines are known to vibrate, even high-tech new ones. The sound can travel through the floor and walls to your neighbors. Location matters as well. If said vibrating washing machine is located right underneath or above your neighbor's home office, it could be particularly problematic. In this case, they might be more annoyed than if it was located underneath or above their kitchen.

Pet Noises

Only the best apartment communities are pet-friendly. Embracing our residents’ fur-babies is one of our top priorities at Indian Woods Apartments

However, sometimes pets are noisy and can annoy neighbors by barking, scratching floors, or being erratic.

How Do I Know If My Neighbors Can Hear Me?

There are a few ways you can tell if noise you’re making is bothering fellow neighbors— some signs are subtle, while others are quite obvious.

You're Receiving Complaints

If something is really bothering one of your neighbors, they will let you know directly or speak to the property manager. If they want to communicate with you directly, they may leave a note, knock on your door, or speak with you when they see you around the community.

If they reach out to the property management, then you will get a call or visit from someone on the management team such as a leasing specialist.

Your Neighbor Starts Making Noise

If your neighbor starts to make noise out of the blue, they could be trying to give you a not-so-subtle hint to “keep it down.”

This is definitely the case if they start to make noise when you’re watching TV or in the middle of a strenuous jazzercise workout.

The Type of Construction

Depending on the type of material used in the apartment, it may be difficult to avoid making loud noises. If the floor plan is built using thin materials, then there’s a good chance that your neighbors can hear noise coming from your apartment.

This is a tricky situation, so don’t worry about it unless your neighbors complain.

How to Solve a Noise Problem

When you’re searching for your next apartment, make sure to keep your ears open during the tour! The best way to solve a noise problem is to never have one in the first place. You can do this by diagnosing the noise situation from the get-go and asking the touring agent if noise is an issue in that specific apartment.

Then, once you decide on your home, you can intentionally decorate and furnish it in a way that reduces noise. For example, you can use carpets on hard floors to dampen footsteps— it’s very effective. You can also use stick-on spots or chair booties to protect floors from scratches.

Another way to respect your neighbors is to let them know that certain times of the day may be noisier than others. People are less likely to mind if you let them know when something is happening ahead of time. You can also limit noisy activities to the daytime hours when most neighbors are at work or school.
